New statutes and regulations have been proposed and task forces to study these issues have been formed. California

The Medical Board of California re-established its Operation Safe Medicine (OSM) unit in Southern California on July 1, 2009.  The mission of OSM is to protect California health care consumers from various unsafe and unlicensed practices.  The unit targets unlicensed activity, corporate practice of medicine and violations of supervision requirements.

OSM was initially established in 2000 but closed a few years later due to budget cuts.  In November 2007 the Medical Board re-established OSM, dedicating its staff to the enforcement of laws related to the unsafe practice of medicine in California.  These activities include, but are not limited to, the various uses of lasers for cosmetic procedures.
